Tk 15 lakh collected on day 1 of DNCC‍‍`s month-long special mosquito eradication drive

In a month-long special mosquito eradication drive that began on Saturday, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) collected a total of Tk 14.85 lakh in fines from 17 cases for finding larvae.

"No one knows where I will go in the mosquito eradication drive. Everything is cleaned up when notified in advance. So, I will go for a surprise visit to different wards without informing anyone to see the actual situation. I don‍‍`t trust anyone in this case. I will go wherever I want and take action,” said DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Saturday, according to a press release.

The mayor said this while conducting a surprise visit to Mohammadpur area of the capital on Saturday morning.

During this time, he visited the basement of some high-rise buildings in Japan Garden City. After going to the basement of the three buildings, the mayor found numerous Aedes mosquitoes in the stagnant water.

"The city corporation will not clean the stagnant water inside the building. Our staff cannot enter these buildings. Not only this area, but many buildings and houses in Dhaka have been blocked from entering for our staff,” said the mayor.

“Aedes larvae grows more in stagnant water inside the house than in other places. Studies have shown that about 48 percent of Aedes larvae grow in basements where cars are kept and washed. Therefore, the building owner has to take the responsibility of keeping the environment inside the building clean,” he added.

Responding to a question from a journalist, the mayor said, "We have been working in the field to eliminate mosquitoes since before the monsoon season. We have added members of BNCC and Bangladesh Scouts to the campaign.”

"I am in the field; all my councillors will be in the field. I appeal to the leaders of various residential areas, representatives of the society to keep your area clean. If everyone cooperates, it will be possible to control dengue,” the mayor also said.
